Contract-unit arithmetic should precede any claim that a futures position offsets a Bitcoin holding. The relevant unit is BTC exposure per contract; a small margin deposit does not make the underlying exposure equally small.

Three reproducible examples

Ten contracts represent 1 BTC of contract exposure because 10 × 0.10 = 1. A $1,000 increase in the quoted futures price changes the value of one long contract by $100 before costs: 0.10 × $1,000. A short contract has the opposite sign. Neither example is an observed trade or a current Bitcoin quotation.

For an illustrative 0.36 BTC holding, three short contracts offset 0.30 BTC in contract-unit terms, leaving 0.06 BTC long. Four short contracts represent 0.40 BTC and leave a 0.04 BTC overhedge. The appropriate choice cannot be inferred from arithmetic alone; it depends on the objective and the permitted residual.

Equal units do not establish a perfect hedge

A spot holding and a dated futures contract can have different price changes. An analysis needs to specify the contract maturity, the spot price used for comparison, and the basis between them. A ten-contract position therefore describes a unit match, not a proven dollar-for-dollar hedge over every horizon.

Margin is a collateral requirement rather than the notional amount at risk. This article does not supply a margin figure: requirements vary and must be obtained from the current exchange and broker arrangements. Financial settlement also differs from receiving or delivering the underlying Bitcoin.

A useful research output

For each proposed hedge, record spot units, contract units, integer rounding, remaining BTC exposure and a separate basis-risk assumption. Evaluate collateral needs independently. A result that depends on uninterrupted funding should disclose that dependence rather than presenting the hedge as risk-free.
